Beyond Grilling: Three Ways You Can Use an Old Classic Grill

by Bonnie Cruz

Simple classic grills such as the classic Weber grill feature a circular pit for the coals, a simple metal grate and a lid with a variety of ventilation options balanced on a metal frame. If you have one of these old grills lying around or if you find one, you can use that grill for a range of projects. Wondering what to do with your old classic grill? Take a look at these ideas:

1. Turn it into a fire pit

The beautiful thing about classic old grills (which you can actually still buy from a range of manufacturers including Weber) is that they are simple. Cooking over one of these grills is more like cooking over fire. There are no bells and whistles like propane tanks or electric side burners or anything else.

Due to their simplicity, they can be easily turned into a fire pit. Simply, remove the grate and use the grill as is, or bury the circular bottom half of the grill in the ground to create an in-ground fire pit. If you have the lid, you can use it to extinguish the fire when you're done using it.

2. Convert it to a smoker

Creating a smoker out of an old grill is also simple. When you want to smoke, you just heat the grill to a very low heat add wood chips or freshly cut wood from a cherry or tree with aromatic wood.

Then, you add your meat and let it smoke for several hours. With this hot smoking method, you don't need to modify the grill, but if you want to make a slow smoker, you can use the grill to create your smoke (using charcoal and wood).

Then, you can run a bit of tube through the ventilation holes in the grill's lid. Finally, run the hose into a sealed container holding your meat (this can be anything from a wooden box to a small shed). The smoke will run from the grill into your smoking container, and it will smoke your meat slowly over several days.

3. Plant flowers in it

For a fun and kitschy look, take an old classic grill and fill it with soil and flowers. These upcycled planters look great in grills as they are, or you can buy spray paint to make the grill a fun colour.

If you like, you can hang the lid next to the grill, you can place it upturned on the ground and use it as a second planter or you can just get rid of it. Have more questions? Contact a company like Weber barbeques to learn more.
