How to Choose the Right Fabric for the Replacement Covers of Your Dining Room Chairs

by Bonnie Cruz

Do you have old dining chairs in your home? Are the current chair covers stained, faded, or showing signs of wear and tear? Instead of investing in new, costly chairs, you can revamp your old dining room chairs by replacing their covers. New covers can transform not only the chairs but also the entire dining space. However, you must choose the right fabric for the project. Below are three factors to help you pick the best material for your chairs' replacement covers.

Dining room style and usage habits

What is the style of your dining room? Is it a formal or casual dining space? Formal dining rooms are usually used by adults and are reserved for family meals. Therefore, they don't experience heavy foot traffic. For a formal dining room, you can opt for classy chair fabrics such as linen, silk and wool blend. These fabrics are suited for chairs in low-traffic dining rooms.

Conversely, for a casual dining room, you need chair covers that can withstand heavy traffic without getting worn out prematurely. Linen is a great option for casual, heavy-traffic dining rooms. However, it has delicate fibres that can easily get damaged by stains. Therefore, if there's a risk of staining, go for leather instead. Leather is durable and easy to clean; thus, it is an excellent choice for your chair covers.

Pets and kids in the household

Does your household have kids or pets? If so, you require chair covers that can withstand regular spills and scratches. Leather and blended fabrics such as cotton, polyester and linen blends are ideal for kids because they don't stain easily. When stains occur, the fabrics are easy to clean.

If you have a dog, choose a fabric that isn't rough or scratchy. Cotton and linen are great options for dog owners. Conversely, if you have a cat, select loose and textured fabrics, such as microfiber, micro-suede and synthetic leather. Avoid polyester, as it can be dangerous if your cat chews on it.

Cleaning and maintenance requirements

Different fabrics have varying cleaning and maintenance needs. Materials such as cotton duck, leather, canvas, microfiber and polyester are easy to clean at home. Therefore, they are suitable for casual dining room chairs in homes with pets and kids. Materials such as silk, velvet and wool should be dry-cleaned. Cleaning these fabrics in the washer can cause wrinkling and shrinkage. The materials are high-maintenance; thus, they are suited only for formal dining room chairs or homes with no kids.

Whichever replacement fabric you pick for your chairs, make sure to invest in quality versions that won't wear and tear with frequent cleaning. Also, opt for timeless colours and prints that will blend seamlessly with the rest of the dining room decor.
